MINGAY, Robert William

No. 12430, Private, Robert William MINGAY
Aged 17
7th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Died on Tuesday, 29th December 1914

Robert William Mingay was born in Pakenham in 1897, (Thingoe Q3-1897 4A:818), baptised in Pakenham St Mary on 1st February 1898, son of William James and Kate MINGAY (née HALLS ).

1901 census...Aged 3, he was at Grimston Road, Great Barton with his father William J MINGAY, [40] horsekeeper born Pakenham; his mother Kate [40] born Bradfield St Clare; brothers Charles[10], Eric Vivian [1] and Redvers B [7 months] all born in Pakenham, and half brother Victor Claude HALLS [14] born in Bury St Edmunds.

1911 census...Aged 13, a farm labourer, he was at 40 Middle Green, Higham with his parents and brothers Charles William (farm labourer), Eric Vivian and Redvers Baden.

He enlisted in Bury St Edmunds. The contact name against the personal inscription on the headstone documents is Mr V. HALL, Higham, Bury St Edmunds, presumably his half brother Victor.
Without his Army records we cannot know how he died. He evidently was under training at Shornecliffe and had not served overseas, hence no medals.

The Bury Free Press of 16th January 1915 reported:-
HIGHAM - MEMORIAL SERVICE - At the parish church on Saturday a short memorial service was held for the late Prvt.Ernest Byam, of the 1st Norfolk Regiment who was killed in action on the Persian Gulf on December 3rd: also of Prvt William Mingay, Lord Kitchener's Army who died in hospital on December 30th at Shornecliffe. The service was conducted by the Vicar, the Rev. W.Thwaites.
